Cory Hunter Asbury was born on October 15, 1985. Music influenced him since childhood, and he started writing songs at a young age while growing up in North Carolina. At 17, Asbury began leading worship at his local church.

In 2004, he graduated from Franklin High School and initially planned to study at UNC Chapel Hill.
