Christopher Dwayne Tomlin was born in 1972 in Grand Saline, Texas, to Donna and Connie Tomlin. He has two younger brothers named Ryan and Cory. His father gave him his first guitar, and he learned to play by listening to Willie Nelson albums.

At the age of fourteen, Tomlin wrote his first worship song, and he began leading worship in his youth group during high school. After graduating from Grand Saline High School in 1990, he enrolled in Tyler Junior College (TJC) with plans to pursue a medical or physical therapy career. Eventually, he earned a degree in psychology from Texas A&M.

Tomlin is part of CompassionArt, a charity and songwriting team that released an album in 2008. In 2014, he joined the board of directors of CURE International, a nonprofit organization providing medical care to children in the developing world.

In May 2008, Tomlin announced his departure from Austin Stone Community Church to co-found a new church in Atlanta, Georgia, with Louie Giglio. The Passion City Church had its inaugural service on February 15, 2009, with Tomlin serving as one of its worship leaders.


After graduating from high school in 1992, Tomlin went to Texas A&M University to pursue a career in medicine. However, he became more involved with Breakaway, a student Christian organization, and became a worship leader.

In 1994, he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M. After college, Tomlin led worship at various Texas camps, including the Dawson McAllister Youth Conferences. During his time at Breakaway, Tomlin participated in a Bible study led by Louie Giglio, the founder of Choice Ministries. Together, Tomlin and Giglio founded Passion Conferences in 1997.

Tomlin has a live album recorded at Austin Music Hall and two Christmas albums (2009, 2015), both topping Billboard’s Holiday Albums chart.

He has shared the stage with modern Christian performers like Delirious?, Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, and MercyMe. Tomlin has headlined multiple tours, collaborated with Passion Conferences, and participated in national and international tours and events. He has also attended conferences and festivals, including Grand Saline’s annual Salt Festival in Texas, Hillsong’s 2007 conference, and the SoCal Harvest in Anaheim.

On June 14, 2007, Tomlin’s version of “Indescribable” was used as the official wake-up call for Space Shuttle flight STS-117, for flight Specialist Patrick Forrester.

Chris Tomlin has won 23 GMA Dove Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for his 2012 album, “And If Our God Is for Us…”. He also has two RIAA platinum albums. Time magazine dubbed him the “most often sung artist anywhere” because of his songs being widely sung in contemporary churches. His 2013 album, “Burning Lights,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking it as the fourth CCM album to achieve this.

In 2009, Tomlin received two Visionary Award nominations: Male Entertainer of the Year and Song of the Year for “Jesus Messiah.”
