Rodney Howard-Browne is a Christian preacher and evangelist known for his Charismatic beliefs. Alongside his wife, Adonica Howard-Browne, he founded The River at Tampa Bay church in 1996. Rodney also leads Revival Ministries International.
Biography
Rodney Morgan Howard-Browne was born on June 12, 1961, in America and has South African heritage. Growing up in Port Elizabeth and East London, South Africa, he, along with his brothers Mervyn, Bazil, and Gil, were raised in a Pentecostal home by their father, Frank Mervyn Derric Howard-Browne, a clergyman who passed away in 2005.
At the age of five, Rodney embraced Christianity. In the 1980s, he volunteered for Youth for Christ before becoming a teacher at Rhema Bible School in Johannesburg.
Since the mid-1990s, Rodney has been living in Tampa, Florida, where he serves as the pastor of The River Church in Tampa Bay. The River is recognized as both Pentecostal and Charismatic. Rodney’s revival meetings at The River are known for causing laughter “in the name of the Lord” and other phenomena reminiscent of historical revivals like the Great Awakenings and the Azusa Street Revival. He, along with other leaders, founded Revival Ministries International, an organization he leads. Rodney humorously refers to himself as “God’s bartender” and the “holy ghost bartender.”

Family Life
Adonica (formerly Weyers), whom Rodney Howard-Browne married in 1981, is his wife. In December 1989, the family moved from South Africa to the United States. In April 1989, Howard-Browne established his first American church in Clifton Park, New York.
Tragically, on Christmas Day 2002, Kelly Browne, Howard-Browne’s daughter, passed away at the age of 18 due to cystic fibrosis. In response, he made a promise that the “devil will pay with one hundred million souls and one billion dollars into world missions since he has taken their daughter with this dread disease.”
Ministry
The Rodney Howard-Browne Evangelistic Association was established in November 1993. In 1994, the family moved to the Tampa Bay, Florida, area. Rodney’s elder brother, Gil, went on to run Times of Refreshing Ministries, an online evangelical ministry.
In January 1994, Rodney’s younger brother Bazil founded his own evangelical ministry with the goal of helping people achieve financial freedom through God’s unique anointing. Bazil had previously worked with Rodney for a full year.
Rodney Howard-Browne founded a congregation called “The River” in 1996 at Tampa Bay Church in Florida, where he has been the pastor since then. Alongside the River Bible Institute and Revival Ministries International, Rodney and his wife also established the Rodney Howard-Browne School of Ministry.
During a series of revival services in 1993, Rodney introduced holy laughter to Carpenter’s Home Church in Lakeland, Florida, with Karl Strader. This led to holy laughter revivals in nearby Florida cities like Melbourne, Titusville, Stuart, and Vero Beach.
In 1994, at the “Toronto Blessing” revival in Canada, Rodney brought holy laughter to the charismatic Toronto Airport Vineyard Church (shortly after its expulsion by its parent Vineyard Church). A year later, he introduced holy laughter to the Assemblies of God (AOG) Brownsville Church in Pensacola, Florida, alongside evangelist Steve Hill. This incident became widely known in Christian communities as the Brownsville Revival.
Controversies
In 1999, Rodney Howard-Browne gained widespread recognition in the US when his Ministries organization leased Madison Square Garden in New York City for a six-week event called Good News New York. Despite being criticized in local media as a “giant flop” and an attempt to mimic a Billy Graham-style faith uprising, the event at the 19,000-seat arena had only 3,000 attendees, and the estimated cost was up to $10 million.
In 2012, it was revealed that Rodney Howard-Browne’s church had hosted political gatherings for the Florida Republican Party in the two years prior, including one for presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. At the event, Howard-Browne called for a national “rising” of Christian Americans that would not be silenced.
To raise funds for the River School of Government, a degree-granting program run by Howard-Browne and his wife under Revival Ministries, providing training for those aspiring to run for public office, Howard-Browne published “The Killing of Uncle Sam: The Demise of the United States of America,” scheduled for release in May 2018.
