Ministry
Dr. Alex Himaya founded and leads The Church at BattleCreek in Tulsa. Around 100 members of the remaining congregation in Broken Arrow, a Tulsa suburb, invited him to become the Senior Pastor in 2002.
The Gracemont church in Broken Arrow had faced a decline in membership, and the remaining members, handling a large meeting place acquired in the 1980s, along with a substantial mortgage, sought Dr. Himaya’s help.
Understanding that the church needed a fresh start with a new name, ministry initiatives, and a strong focus on evangelism, Dr. Himaya accepted the role.
In a meeting, he outlined the church’s new direction, emphasizing the need for a secure place where those not inclined towards religion could learn about Jesus Christ. The congregation officially became “The Church at BattleCreek.” Despite its rapid growth, the main campus remains in Broken Arrow.
BattleCreek Church
On August 14, 2003, The Church at BattleCreek had its first open service. By its third anniversary in August 2006, the church had over 1600 people attending its two Sunday morning services, with more than 700 kids and teenagers. They had paid off the mortgage, hired five full-time pastors, and added other full- and part-time staff members.
The Church at BattleCreek was involved in community service, running a daycare center and providing meeting space and financial aid to Christian churches serving Spanish- and Arabic-speaking communities in the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. They began building a 1,200-seat auditorium with advanced audio-visual capabilities in 2007.
In 2014, Immanuel Baptist Church in downtown Tulsa became a satellite congregation of The Church at BattleCreek. With this addition, the church expanded to four locations—three in Tulsa and one in Wheaton, Illinois. However, a plan to grow the Midtown, Tulsa location faced opposition in 2015.
Alex’s role as pastor played a crucial part in establishing the Adopt(ed) ministry, aiding families in personal adoption through education and empowerment in small groups held in their homes. The Himaya family also adopted a girl from Ethiopia.
